Wedge Mountain!!! Whistler, Canada

"... buddy... that doesn't look nice to ascend, hey?"
"... yeah... "

It had been over 10 hours since we left our base camp beside the Wedgemount lake. The peak of Wedge was right in front of us. However, we decided to descend.

'If you know your enemy and know yourself, in a hundred battles you will never be defeated. If you know only yourself, you will end in a draw. If you know neither your enemy nor yourself, you will be defeated every time.'
If you know the mountain that you are about to climb and know yourself, in a hundred trips you will never meet with an accident. If you know only yourself, you will meet with an accident once out of 2 trips. If you know neither mountain nor yourself, you will meet with an accident and die.

It is always the case in mountain that an unanticipated situation occurs. That's true. However, That is not an explanation for climber's destiny. An explanation that can explain whatever else does not explain anything at all. We need more knowledge and more skills. It was a great chance to find out where we are.

2:00 am.
Stopped an alarm and listened carefully. Rain had already stopped. Avoiding dripping water, we carefully opened the fly sheet.

"Holy crap..."

In the sky there was nothing but stars and the moon. It was cold out there. The ridge line was like a huge wall surrounding us. Thoughts stopped and we lost ourselves in peace. A calm and beautiful moment of the mountain.  In contrast to cold air, our hearts were well warmed up to go.

2:00 am

Avoiding major risks, we chose a line directly ascending to the peak. Snow was hard packed, but the ice was not too hard. We enjoyed comfortable climbing with crampons and ice axes. Only calm vast space was there. The glacier echoed with sound of crampons and axe.

When I started climbing icy walls with crampons, I felt so scared. So scared that I couldn't take a step forward. It can be compared to life. I took a deep breath and looked around my feet, then took a step forward and found my footing. "Yes. I got on it." And then, took another step. Finally we found that there are also excitement and thrill in proportion to fear and we can concentrate far better on our own line than ever. Getting a kick out of having a sure grip on ice with crampons, we got more and more addicted to it.

Looking back, there was vast scenery of the glacier that we had climbed. Looking ahead, there was a crazy beautiful creviced area of North Arete of Wedge. The creviced area was crazy beautiful, wonderful, fantastic... we can't describe it. It was like art. No other art on earth is as beautiful. We explored the glacier as if we were children in a playground.

Everything looked perfect... until then.
Just before the ridge, we met a huge crevasse. We couldn't see it from the starting point of North Arete. It was too huge to pass it so we changed plan. Still it was so beautiful. So deep and so blue. There was no sign of life there and it gave us a glimpse of death.

Once back to the starting point of North Arete, we traversed north and climbed a steep narrow chute. The ridge was narrow and both sides had cliffs. Even a tiny mistake meant death. It's not easy for sure but not too bad because rocks were not loose. Getting carefully on one step to another, we got more and more thrilled. It excited our curiosity.

Before the very last steep part to the peak,
"... buddy... that doesn't look nice to ascend, hey?"
"... yeah... "

The very last rocky part was so messy that we couldn't go ahead any more. On our right hand side there was the Wedgemount Glacier, on our left hand side there was Weart Glacier, behind us was Weart Mountain and just in front of us was the peak of Wedge Mountain.

This is mountain climbing.
Sometimes we can go to the peak and sometime not. Still, we were on the Wedge Mountain. We are learning step by step. Every time we are on a mountain, we feel it and think about it. We have another chance but we don't have another life. We had to go back home safely.

"Next time, buddy. Let's go to the peak there."
We put an end to our challenge and started descending, the biggest "uphill task" of this trip.
